Course Overview

The purpose of this qualification is to offer professional development and continuing professional development (CPD) by expanding knowledge relevant to roles that involve caring for individuals with diabetes. It is suitable for learners who are currently employed or seeking employment in the health and social care sector.

This qualification focuses on enhancing knowledge and understanding of diabetes, including the prevention and early intervention of type 2 diabetes, initial care for diabetes, and the treatment and management of the condition.

Learners will have access to online learning platform.

During your time with the Dumfries & Galloway College, support is always available whenever you need it. Each learner is paired with a dedicated personal tutor who will grade all assignments and provide comprehensive feedback for every submission.

Course Content

This course is split into 4 manageable units:

Unit 1: Understand diabetes

Explore the varying functions of glucose and insulin in the blood, the different forms and causes of diabetes, as well as the risk factors associated with each type.

Unit 2: Prevention and early intervention of Type 2 diabetes

Examine the prevention and early intervention of Type 2 diabetes, paying attention to how the condition can be delayed, or even prevented, through healthy lifestyle changes.

Unit 3: Understand the initial care of diabetes

Investigate how Diabetes can be managed and monitored. As well as considering the mental and physical impact that diabetes diagnosis can have on an individual.

Unit 4: Understand treatment and management of diabetes

Develop an understanding of the ongoing care and treatment recommended to control blood glucose levels and identify how best to prevent and detect complications in people with diabetes.

Assessments

This course requires the completion and passing of four tutor marked online unit assessments. Learners are allocated a course tutor who will mark assessments and are able to offer support through the online learning platform.

This qualification provides learners with an understanding of the different types of diabetes and how they can occur. Throughout this program you will develop an awareness of how the onset of Type 2 diabetes can be delayed with lifestyle changes. You will develop an understanding of diabetes diagnosis and how on-going care and treatment of diabetes can control blood sugar levels.

    platform with resources to support written assessment
  • Access to a dedicated tutor for support throughout the
    program via email, phone-call or virtual meetings
  • Virtual course review meeting for assessment feedback
    and discuss practical application in the workplace
